Matthew 16:13-20

THE MISUNDERSTOOD CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH

Matt 16:13-20

INTRODUCTION:

> A.  In this text it is evident men did not understand who Jesus

was – they misunderstood his identity as the Son of God

> B.  Since understanding is essential to obedience, and                             obedience is essential to one's salvation (Heb 5:8,9;

Jhn 6:44,45) surely we can see the tragedy of

misunderstanding Jesus Christ the Saviour of the world

> C.  From other passages we find that the kingdom (church) of

Christ was also misunderstood Acts 1:6

> D.  Since the saved are added to the church Acts 2:47, the church

and the body are the same Col 1:18 and Christ is the Saviour of

the body Eph 5:23; it is then also essential that we understand

what the church is and its purpose here on earth

> E.  (Title) Much of the misunderstanding is due to prejudice and

ignorance of God's word but for our lesson we want to look

at some of these misunderstandings of the church today.

DISCUSSION:

>  I.    THE MISUNDERSTOOD CHRIST

> A.  They thought of Him as just Joseph's son like any other

man  Matt 13:55; Lk 3:23; Jhn 6:42

1.   They misunderstood, yet the prophets made it very

clear that he was the Christ the Son of God born of a

virgin Isa 7:14; 9:6

2.   Men today are the same, they think of Him as a good

man who had a great influence in mankind

> B.  Thought of Christ as one of the prophets - John the

baptist Elias, Jeremiah (text)

1.   His work was similar to theirs

2. Yet he was not just one of the prophets Jhn 6:13,14; Acts 3:23

> C.  His mission was misunderstood Jhn 6:26

1.   Felt His mission was only of a social nature

2.   Heal sick, feed hungry, change political situation

3.   Though Jesus did some of these things it was not his

mission here on earth

4.   Miracles and signs were for the purpose of proving

that he             was the Christ Jhn 20:30,31

>  II.   THE MISUNDERSTOOD CHURCH

> A.  As they thought Christ originated with man - so do men

today think the church originated with man

1.   The church is not of man, was not designed by man,

was not promised by man and was not built by man

2.   It was in the eternal purpose of god Eph 3:10,11;

See also Psa 127:1

3.   Jesus said "I will build MY CHURCH (text)

a.   Purchased it with his blood Acts 20:28

b.   Gave himself for it Eph 5:25

c.   The church is not a human institution

> B.  As they considered Christ one of many prophets - So

today men consider the church one of many

1.   Jesus was like the prophets in many respects – so is

his church like others in some ways

2.   It has members, follows teaching, members meet at

appointed time , has preachers and other likenesses,

but it is not like others in all respects

3.   The Lord's church is a divine institution: God designed

it (Eph 3:11), Christ built it (Matt 16:18), Holy Spirit

revealed it (Eph 3:1-6; Col 1:18) none can claim

this but the Lord's church

4.   It is different in doctrine and practice

5.   The Word produces the church - not the church

producing the word as men have it today

> C.  As they considered Christ's mission to be a social one –

so do men today think of mission of the church

1.   Jesus' purpose not to feed the poor, etc. but to give

his life a ransom for many Matt 20:28 - to seek and

save the lost Lk 19:10

2.   Though His life and teaching contributed to the

betterment of society this was not his mission

3.   Some consider the church an organization through

which we work social & political reform (provide

entertainment for young, meals for the middle-age

and homes for the aged

4.   Although church will contribute to the improvement of

society through preaching the Word and righteous

lives of its members, Jesus did not advocate this as

the purpose of the church

>  III.  MISSION / PURPOSE OF CHURCH IS SAVE SOULS

> A.  Church is pillar and ground of the truth 1Tim 3:15

> B.  Since the church is the support of the truth and the truth

makes men free Jhn 8:32, it follows that the mission of

the church is to save souls

> C.  Saving souls is accomplished by Lord's church working

in three areas: Evangelism, Edification, and

Benevolence Eph 4:12

CONCLUSION:

> A.  Jesus was a divine being with a divine mission

> B.  The church is a divine institution with a divine mission

C.  May God help us that we may always understand this and

labor accordingly to the glory of God in accomplishing His

ordained plan of work in the world

> D.  Jesus is saviour of the body the church Eph 5:23 and you

are not in this body unless you are saved Acts 2:47

Heb 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;   9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Jhn 6:44,45 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.         45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

Acts 1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head  of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

Matt 13:55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and  his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

Lk 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

Jhn 6:42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Jhn 6:13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.      14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

Acts 3:23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.

Jhn 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

Jhn 20:30,31 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:      31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Eph 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

Psa 127:1 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church,  and gave himself for it;

Matt 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Lk 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

1Tim 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Jhn 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
