Leviticus 20:26

SEPARATE & PECULIAR FROM THE WORLD

Leviticus 20:26

INTRODUCTION: (read text)

> A.  God has always desired that his people be unique,

separate and peculiar

> B.  In every dispensation God has required severance,

exclusiveness and holiness for his purposes

1.   In first dispensation Patriarchal age, a family religion. Father

of family was to see that his children remained unique

2.   In second dispensation, Mosaic age, ten commandments

given with other laws to sever them from the pagans

3.   In third and present dispensation, Christian age or last

days, we have the law of Christ or the New Testament

to sever us from those of the world

> C.  (TITLE) Think with me now about being separate and

peculaiar from the world

DISCUSSION:

>  I.    SEEN IN THE CALL OF ABRAHAM

> A.  Idea of severance seen in call of Abraham Gen 12:1-3                   > 1.         Severed from his country, kindred and father's house that God might make of him a great nation, a

unique and peculiar people zealous of good works

> 2.   Nation developed in Egypt and was required to be

severed from Egyptians to serve Jehovah Ex 8:20

> 3.   God brought them out to be a peculiar treasure, a

kingdom of priests and an holy nation Ex 19:4,5

> B.  Note in Lev 20:8,22,24,26 what God says

>  II.   ISRAEL A SEPARATE PEOPLE

> A.  In Lev 20 he deals with several sins that Israel as well

as  Christians are to avoid

> 1.   Idolatry 1-5; witchcraft 6,27; disrespect for parents 9;

adultery 10; incest 11-14, 19, 20

> 2.   Homosexuality 13; bestiality 15-17; eating unclean

meat 25

> B.  These common among the inhabitants of Canaan v 23                              1.         God abhorred these sins, so he drove the

Canaanites out of the land and gave it to Israel

2.   Conditional - based on severance and holiness v 26

> C.  Jehovah said, "I have separated you" from other

people, by your daily habits and social customs

> D.  Became rebellious, changed God's government; they

served other gods and inter-married with the heathen                                1.         Punishment, Israel carried to Assyrian captivity

during reign of Hoshea in 722 BC  2Ki 17:3-6

2.   Judah carried to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar

during the reign of Jehoiakim in 606 BC

3.   Came again in reign of Jehoiachin in 597 BC and

took 10,000; in 586 BC completely besieged

4.   Israel learned the tragic lesson of disobedience

>  III.  NOW CHRISTIANS TO BE SEPARATE

> A.  Today, Christians (God's Israel today Rom 9:4-6) in

like fashion, are to be severed, unique and peculiar to

those about us

1.   The word "ye" is very emphatic in 1Pet 2:5,9

2.   We are a "chosen generation" (ASV "an elect race"),

a royal priesthood, and holy nation, a peculiar people

(ASV "a people for God's own possession).

> B.  Christians set apart and sanctified by Word Jhn 17:17

> C.  This uniqueness now seen in:

> 1.   Our NAME

a.   Christians Acts 11:26; 1Pet 4:16; Isa 62:2                                                     b.     Salvation is in the name of Christ Acts 4:12

> 2.   Our CREED or rule of faith and practice

a.   We do not accept any human creeds Matt 15:9                                             b.         Bible our only guide 2Tim 3:16,17; 2Pet 1:3;                                                                1Pet 4:11; Jude 3

> 3.   Our ATTITUDE and WAY OF LIFE in that we try to                                            maintain a separateness from the world 1Pet 2:11,12 2Cor 6:17,18

> 4.   Our ORGANIZATION: Phil 1:1; Acts 14:23; 6:2,3                        > 5.         Our WORSHIP Jhn 4:24

a.   Simple N. T. worship practiced: teaching,

praying singing, giving and Lord's supper

b.   Consider how severed and unique we are to

refuse more or less than this.  Reason found in

2Jhn 9

> 6.   Our WORK Eph 4:12 – Strengthen Saints; Teach

the lost; help needy saints

> 7.   Our TEACHING (i.e.) baptism for remission of sins Acts 2:38; 22:16; Rom 6:3,4; Gal 3:26,27; 1Pet 3:21 Just one church Eph 4:4; Col 1:18; Matt 16:18; etc          > 8.         Our UNITY Jhn 17:21; Eph 4:4-6; 1Cor 1:10-13

CONCLUSION:

> A.  After all of this teaching we ask the question: "Have you

been uniquely severed from the world?"

> B.  Remember, friendship with the world is enmity with God.

Jas 4:4 and the wages of sin is death Rom 6:23

Gen 12:1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:    2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:    3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Ex 8:20 And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.

Ex 19:4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.   5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

2Ki 17:3 Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents.   4 And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison.   5 Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years.   6 In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

Rom 9:4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;     5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.     6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:

1Pet 2:5, 9 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.     9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Jhn 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

1Pet 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

Isa 62:2 And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Matt 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

2Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:   17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2Pet 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

1Pet 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever.

Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

1Pet 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;   12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

2Cor 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,    18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Phil 1:1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

Acts 14:23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

Acts 6:2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.   3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

2Jhn 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
