JESUS CHRIST - SAVIOUR AND LORD

Luke 2:1-11

INTRODUCTION:

> A.  Today we hear a lot about Jesus being our Saviour but

very little about Jesus being our Lord. Lk 1:30-33

> B.  The Terms "Saviour" & lord" present two separate and

distinct aspects of our relationship to Jesus Christ

> C.  (Title) Let's examine these two terms and see the

application of the principles contained in them.

DISCUSSION:

> I.    DEFINITION OF TERMS

> A.  "JESUS" - a transliteration of the Hebrew "Joshua"

meaning Jehovah is the Saviour.

> B.  "CHRIST" -  "Messiah" the anointed one, a term applied                            to the priest who were anointed with the Holy Oil > C.        "SAVIOUR" - Deliverer, preserver

> 1.   Used of God 1Tim 2:3

> 2.   Used of Christ Acts 5:31; Eph 5:23

> D.  "LORD" - Master,  Owner,  Sir signifies having power or                             authority

> 1.   Used of an owner Lk 19:33

> 2.   Used of one to whom service is due for any reason                                           Matt 6:24

> 3.   Used of an emperor or king Acts 25:26

4.   Used other ways, but these show the idea involved                                          in the way it is applied to Jesus

> II.   JESUS AS SAVIOUR - DELIVERER OR PRESERVER > A.        Of what is Jesus the saviour? (Implies someone is lost) > 1.         The world Jhn 4:42

> 2.   The body Eph 5:23

> 3.   Individuals Phil 3:20; Tit 1:4

> 4.   All that obey him Heb 5:8,9

> B.  Having a saviour implies blessings to be received

> 1.   All spiritual blessing in Christ Eph 1:3

a.   Redemption Eph.1:5-7

b.   Forgiveness Acts 5:31

c.   Justification Rom.8:30

d.   Sanctification Heb.10:10

e.   Mediator Heb.4:15,16; 1Tim 2:5

2.   This equals being preserved, delivered or saved from                                       Spiritual death and having hope of eternal life with God

3.   It also involves being relieved of the fear of physical                                         death 1Cor 15:54-56

> C.  How do I receive these blessings provided by my Saviour?

> 1.   Note plan of salvation & requirements of faithfulness

Acts 17:11; Rom 10:17; Jhn 8:24; Heb 11:6; Lk 13:3;

Matt 10:32,33; Rom 6:3, 4; Gal 3:27

2.   These lead to the Idea of Jesus as "Lord"

> III. JESUS AS LORD - MASTER, OWNER, SOVEREIGN,                         RULER

> A.  God made Jesus Lord Acts 2:36; Matt 28:18; 1Cor 15:27 > B.        Over what is Jesus Lord?

> 1.   Lord of harvest Matt 9:38

> 2.   Lord over David Matt 22:41-43

> 3.   Lord over the apostles Jhn 13:13,14

> 4.   Lord over all Acts 10:36

> 5.   "Our Lord" 1Thess 3:11; Jude 1:4

> 6.   Lord of Lords 1Tim 6:15

> C.  The term "Lord" demands responsibility

1.   Not enough to just call Him Lord Matt 7:21,22

2.   Cannot serve two masters Matt 6:24

3.   We must do His will and it regulates us in every area                                        or relationship of Life Jas 4:15

4.   How do I serve Him

a.   By being obedient to plan of salvation

b.   Engage in acts of public worship Jhn 4:24

c.   Care for spiritual brothers & sisters 1Cor 12:25                                             d.         Family, social, civil obligations Eph 5,6; Rom 13                                     e.         Procreation, reproducing - Sowing the seed of the                                 kingdom to produce more Christians

> D.  The term Lord demands accountability

1.   Lord has right to discipline Heb 12:5; 1Cor 11:32

2.   We will all give account 2Cor 5:10; Rom 14:12

3.   I am responsibile individually to do what my Master                                           requires of me Rom 14:4

> E.  As Lord Jesus has the right of retribution or punishment                            Matt 7:23; 25:30,41,46; Jhn 12:48

CONCLUSION:

> A.  As Saviour, Jesus has preserved us from death, he has

lifted us from the quagmire of sin, degradation and despair                 to -       a higher plain of righteousness, holiness and hope of an                        eternal existence with him 2Pet 1:5-11

> B.  As Lord, Jesus has the right to expect me to give my

allegiance to Him and His will unreservedly, to serve him                    faithfully until death in order to receive the promised reward                      Rev 2:10; Matt 10:22

> C.  As Lord, Jesus has the right to banish me eternally from the               presence of Deity if I refuse to serve Him faithfully Matt 7:23 > D.        Is Jesus Christ your SAVIOUR AND LORD?
