“You See Preacher, This Is The Way It Is!”

So the conversation began, as the married couple entered the preacher’s office.  It continued, “We just don’t love one another anymore” they stated very emphatically.  Then they sat down and waited, obviously expecting the preacher to say, “I guess you might as well get a divorce.”

The preacher looked at them, and said, “I am sorry to hear that you have decided to sin!”  “What?”, they exclaimed. “Who said anything about sin?”  “Well, you did”, the preacher responded.  “When you chose not to do the right thing.“ (Jas 4:17)  He continued, “The right thing is to love your wife.”  (Eph 5:23)  He turned to the wife and said, “The right thing is for you  to love and respect your husband.” (Eph 5:33; Titus 2:4)  “This is God’s will in your marriage.” “But, preacher, you just don’t understand, there is no spark anymore, the romance is just gone”, they defended, “and, besides, aren’t you aware that a great number of people are getting divorced these days?”  The preacher replied, “The Bible doesn’t say that sparks and romance are essential to the continuation of your marriage, but it does say, ‘And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.’”  (Rom 12:2 NASB)
The couple grew more indignant.  “Surely, you won’t say it is good for our children to see and hear the problems we have when we are together?” they challenged.  “No, it isn’t!”  the preacher said.  “But, God did not say divorce is the solution for those problems either, rather, He said, fathers, are not to provoke their children to anger, but to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Eph 6:2) and that women are to love their children too.” (Titus 2:4)  He continued, “What you are to do; is stop your arguing and fighting and behave yourselves toward one another and toward your children and toward God.  Love one another, love your children, love God and His Son, Jesus Christ.”

The couple had had enough.  They got up and stalked out of the office, exclaiming over their shoulder, “Preacher, it is evident that you are not up with the times!”  The preacher thought within himself, “I guess that’s right, but the Lord is the same yesterday, today and forever.   (Heb 13:8), and He is the beginning and the end.” (Rev 21:6)  Then he wept, and he imagined the Lord was weeping, also.

Friends, the above is a fictional story.  Please don’t let it be the true story of your marriage and your life.  The Lord’s Way is always better. “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate” (Mark 10:9 NASB)   Let His Way, be the Way it is!  CAB
